Abstract. This study examines the analytical aspects of the functioning and role of municipal institutions in the context of providing social support to the elderly population of the city. The paper presents the author’s interpretation of the definition of “the elderly population of the city,” taking into account an interdisciplinary and practice‑oriented approach that includes the socio‑status characteristics of the cohort of elderly people and their place in the social structure of a modern city. The study provides an integral, comprehensive, and resource‑based characterization of the forms of social support for elderly city residents, taking into account need‑oriented and competence‑based approaches, which make it possible to form a range of social services for a fairly dispersed group of the elderly population of the city. The authors of the article note that municipal institutions providing social support to elderly residents are a systemic construct consisting of interacting elements that should be considered as a whole in terms of their functioning, transformation, development, and modernization in light of the priority tasks aimed at improving them. In conclusion, the main areas of activity that enhance the role of municipal institutions in the field of social support for the elderly population are systematized and analyzed; these activities are multifaceted in nature and are determined by a set of indicators reflecting the quality of social services.
Keywords: municipal social support institutions, elderly population, urban elderly population, social support, social services.
