ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AS A NEW DIMENSION OF DIGITAL INEQUALITY AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract The aim of the article is to identify the specific features of artificial intelligence use among students at regional universities and to determine the social characteristics and resources associated with differences in its adoption. The empirical basis comprises data from an online questionnaire survey of 264 students from universities in the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Mordovia, conducted from April to June 2026. The analysis employed Pearson’s chi-square test, the Mann–Whitney U test, the Kruskal–Wallis H test, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and ordinal logistic regression. The findings show that more than 80% of respondents use AI regularly or occasionally. The most pronounced differences were found by gender: male students use AI more frequently, report greater confidence in its future professional application, and are more likely to associate AI proficiency with labour-market returns. Extracurricular digital experience demonstrates the most consistent association with AI adoption.
Keywords: sociology, digital inequality, artificial intelligence, university students, regional universities, gender differences, digital socialization, digital capital, AI use.
