AFFORDANCES OF DIGITAL PLATFORMS IN THE CONTEXT OF FORMING THE MEDIA IMAGE OF POLITICAL ACTORS

Abstract. The relevance of this study is justified by the particular significance of the category of affordances – the technological and social capabilities that the platform provides to the user and that determine the format and style of communication. This article examines the problem of the influence of digital platform affordances on the formation of the media image of political actors. Based on an analysis of foreign and Russian studies, the concepts of “affordances” and “imagined audience” are defined; it is shown that the technological opportunities and limitations of social networks shape political actors’ specific perceptions of the audience, determining the choice of communicative strategies. Using the digital platforms Telegram, VKontakte, and Twitter/X as examples, the key affordances of each platform are identified, and the corresponding types of imagined audience and dominant strategies for constructing the media image are characterized. The article concludes that the media image of a political actor is not uniform but is diversified depending on platform features: Telegram orients toward competent informing, VKontakte toward emotional engagement, and Twitter/X toward rapid and confrontational communication.
Keywords: digital platforms; social media; affordances; political actors; imagined audience.
