This article examines the academic mobility of Chinese students within the context of a shifting international educational landscape. For decades, China has been the largest source of international students for Western universities. However, recent years have seen a decline in the number of Chinese students heading to traditional destinations—such as the United States, Canada, and Australia—driven by heightened geopolitical tensions, the imposition of visa restrictions, and increased scrutiny of students from the PRC. Concurrently, particular attention is being paid to evolving motivations for pursuing higher education abroad; these shifts reflect a growing emphasis on safety, a stronger role for families in decision-making, and a more pragmatic approach to post-graduation employment prospects. Amidst these conditions, Chinese students are showing increased interest in studying in geographically closer countries.
